Annual Appeal 2011

Lory's Place could not exist without the support of our community.  Please give today to ensure these programs remain available for those in need.

stacie and ron"My wife Stacie passed away from Ovarian cancer at the young age of 40.  She was in a lot of ways my rock, but now Lory's Place is our rock that keeps us strong."  - Ron Deutscher

These words by Ron Deutscher reflect the role Lory's Place had this year in the lives of Ron and his three children, 7-year-old Connor and Brandon and 11-year-old Ashleigh, since the sad death of the anchor of their lives.  The Deutscher family travels from northern Indiana two times monthly to peer support groups at Lory's Place.  Ron shares their story in his words as follows:

"One of the main reasons I started at Lory's Place was after I read in their brochure about the mental well-being of the children down the road in life. Another reason was that the children felt isolated - everyone at school had a Mom and now they didn't.  Lory's Place put them in touch with other children dealing with loss, and this is key in letting them know that they're not the only ones going through a horrible tragedy.  I also noticed that their behavior was better after going to Lory's Place.  Sometimes we can't make the group because of sports or extreme weather, and without the children being able to express their feelings and keeping them bottled up inside, it comes out in other ways.

Ron Deutscher

I know that as she is looking down from Heaven, she is smiling at what Lory's Place is doing for her family.

I commend the staff at Lory's Place for their sincere caring and knowledge in helping children and adults transition into their new and different life.  At first, and even now, Lory's Place is a healing tool that we need so much.  It's been a year since our loss and the children are doing good in school, sports, and life in general.  I believe that Lory's Place has been significant in helping my kids get on with life but at the same time remember their Mom, how much she loved them and that she did not want this tragedy to happen.  I would say that when it comes to making decisions about the kids' well-being I think about what Stacie (their Mom) would do and try my best to make her proud of my decisions in caring for our children.  I know that as she is looking down from Heaven, she is smiling at what Lory's Place is doing for her family. Also, as much as I would like to think that I'm a Man and Lory's Place is just for the kids, after a year of going there I have to admit that Lory's Place has helped me cry, laugh, think, and most importantly heal the best I can.  A big shout out to all the loving staff and volunteers who help us keep on moving and doing what needs to be done."

We cannot change the outcome of Stacie's cancer, though we sincerely wish we could.  What we can do is provide support and education about the process of grief for little ones such as Connor, Brandon and Ashleigh.  Together with their dad Ron, they now have grief survival tools to navigate their way on the uninvited course of grief that has forever changed their lives.

Because of you, thousands of people are finding their way forward through their grief at Lory's Place.  The story above reflects the difference your gift makes in the lives of people who access our services.  This is your gift in action, and this story is one of many you've made possible.  There are no charges to the participants who attend peer support groups at Lory's Place, or to the 30 schools who receive grief support services right in their buildings when the staff and volunteers from Lory's Place facilitate groups with their students who grieve.  We do not receive federal funding or insurance reimbursements, which is why your gift is so important.

Together, we are working toward our goal of providing hope and strength for every grieving family.  There is no way that Lory's Place, a grief healing and education center of Hospice at Home, could thrive without your support.  In 2010, over 3200 individuals were touched by the grief support services offered by Lory's Place.  Your financial support is needed as much as ever and we are so grateful for your caring heart for those who grieve.  We'd like to ask you to make a tax-deductible gift to help us continue our mission.  Please give today and know that your gift will be reflected in hearts that may continue to hurt, but also beat strong with courage, strength and hope as those who grieve seek their own rock of support at Lory's Place.

Thank you for your support!

P.S.  Please consider joining our Beacon Club or committing to a monthly gift.  Your generous support from the heart aids the healing of grieving children and the people who live in their worlds.
